Alkaline water is the new buzz! What is it and how is it different from normal water?

Although bottled water is becoming a commonplace component of our hectic lives, not all bottled water is made equal. 90% of bottled water brands on store shelves, as well as some brands of natural mineral or spring water, are reverse osmosis filtered water brands. There is a good reason why genuine mineral water and spring water are preferred by water experts all over the world. No other machine or purifier can compare to its protected natural sources, mineral composition, and flavour. A short Google search, however, will reveal a new category that is taking over: alkaline water. It is promoted by athletes, celebrities, and the internet as being healthier than bottled water.

So, what is Alkaline Water?

On a scale of 0 to 14, the pH level determines how acidic or alkaline a substance is. The pH of typical drinking water is 7. The pH of alkaline water is closer to 8. However, the pH is insufficient on its own to generate alkalinity. Natural and beneficial alkaline minerals should also be present in alkaline water. These alkaline minerals include calcium, magnesium, and potassium. We require these minerals in our meals to safeguard heart health, enhance bone density, aid in digestion, and fend off deficiency disorders because our bodies cannot produce them.

It’s more crucial than you might realise how your drinking water comes to have an alkaline pH. These minerals can be created artificially or come from the ground. Compared to natural mineral water, natural citrate minerals have a substantially better bioavailability. Studies reveal that almost none of the usual techniques for demineralizing water after reverse osmosis filtering can be regarded as being sufficiently effective to have a beneficial effect on health.

The question now is whether or not artificially created alkaline ionised water will offer the same advantages as natural alkaline water. Let’s delve deeper for a better comparison.

The raw water used in naturally alkaline water is taken straight from the earth. In order to obtain its natural minerals, which make the water alkaline and raise the pH, the water or source of the aquifer travels above or below the ground through rocks, clay, and alluvial deposits. Ionized water, commonly referred to as artificially manufactured alkaline water, uses raw water that is sourced from anywhere. The water is often purified with RO (reverse osmosis), demineralizing it, before running through the ioniser.

Reverse osmosis, a method of water purification, is used initially to create ionised alkaline water. In reverse osmosis, unneeded molecules, debris, and bacteria are removed from the water through a synthetic membrane. Additionally, this eliminates all of the water’s essential beneficial minerals. The pH of the water is then artificially raised by attaching it to an alkaline ioniser. Due to its protected natural origin, natural alkaline water is initially pure and mineral-rich. Because of this, it doesn’t require chemical refining procedures like reverse osmosis and is instead directly bottled, like draw, preserving the flavours and minerals from the beginning. Citrate minerals that are mined from the earth are added to naturally alkaline water. As a result of being naturally created, the minerals in this water have a higher bioavailability.

Reverse osmosis processed water, on the other hand, is passed through platinum and titanium plates to create alkaline ionised water. This exchange of ions makes the water alkaline. In order to artificially raise the pH, water ionisers electrically divide water molecules into hydrogen (H+) and hydroxide (OH-) ions during electrolysis. The pH is controlled by these electronic ionisers to very high levels of 8, 9, and 10. However, this high pH is only momentary and can gradually decline over time. Nearly 74% of the water used in the reverse osmosis, or RO, process is squandered by machines and filters in addition to demineralizing and removing vital minerals from the water. For every litre of water that is filtered by reverse osmosis, over two litres of water are wasted. This wastes a lot of water and causes significant damage to the environment. In naturally alkaline water, not a single drop of water is wasted or thrown away.

Which is better – naturally alkaline water or ionized alkaline water?

Natural alkaline water is hydrating and good to drink. You can replenish the mineral stores you were born with or acquired via your diet by drinking naturally alkaline water. However, alkaline ionised water deceives your body into believing that it has enough alkalinity. This water’s alkalinity is manufactured artificially, therefore it tends to drop off quickly. In fact, demineralized reverse osmosis water with little mineral content, like water made artificially, has been advised against by the World Health Organization. This is due to the fact that drinking alkaline water that has been demineralized or that has only a high pH and no minerals has no beneficial effects on your health.

It is obvious that naturally alkaline water is better for both the environment and your health, so it should be chosen above ionised alkaline water. The best mineral water to consume is natural mineral water that originates from ethically protected sources and has a special mineral makeup that makes it alkaline. Consider checking for minerals as well as the pH to see whether the water is alkaline. A healthier alternative to what you’re choosing is one that is natural.

Ionized alkaline water currently costs in hundreds. When you can install your own ioniser at home, why purchase bottled alkaline ionised water? Water that is naturally alkaline cannot be manufactured and is good for your diet and way of life. If you purchase alkaline water, be sure it is mineral water that is naturally alkaline.
